The Golden Route – Sharm to Dahab

A 6-day/7-night liveaboard starting and ending in Sharm El Sheikh, exploring the best of Sinai and the “golden city” of Dahab.

There are several stories about how Dahab got its name. Some say it comes from the golden colour of its sandy beaches, others from the glow of the full moon rising over the Gulf of Aqaba — after all, Dahab (ذهب)  is the Arabic word for gold. Our favourite version, however, goes back to the Bedouins who first settled here and called the place “Waqaat Dahab” (وقات ذهاب) — “time goes.” A name inspired by the calm, timeless atmosphere of Dahab, where it’s easy to forget the clock and simply be.
The Golden Route dive safari truly combines the best of two worlds. Starting and ending in lively Sharm El Sheikh, the route takes you to world-famous dive sites in Ras Mohamed National Park and the Straits of Tiran, and north along the quieter, less-visited “golden coast.” From the impressive Million Hope wreck in Nabq to the pristine reefs near Dahab, this itinerary offers both iconic highlights and peaceful, off-the-beaten-path diving.
Aboard our comfortable, fast, and stable South Moon 1, we sail along the Sinai coastline, choosing the best dive sites according to conditions. Weather permitting, this safari offers a rich mix of dramatic walls, vibrant coral gardens, iconic dive sites, and the relaxed, almost timeless feeling that makes Dahab truly special.

The Dive Sites:

Ras Mohamed National Park:
Ras Mohamed National Park is one of the most iconic dive areas in the Red Sea and a true jewel of the Sinai Peninsula. Where the Gulf of Suez meets the Gulf of Aqaba, strong currents and nutrient-rich waters create spectacular reef formations and exceptional marine life.
Dramatic drop-offs, vibrant coral gardens, and dense schools of fish define the dives here. Famous sites such as Shark & Jolanda Reef are known for thrilling drift dives and frequent encounters with pelagic species. Reef sharks, barracudas, tunas, jacks, rays, and countless reef fish move through this underwater crossroads, making Ras Mohamed an unforgettable highlight for divers seeking both beauty and excitement.

The Straits of Tiran:
Located at the entrance to the Gulf of Aqaba, the Straits of Tiran offer some of the most exciting and scenic diving in the northern Red Sea. The area is shaped by four famous reefs — Jackson, Gordon, Thomas, and Woodhouse — known for their steep walls, healthy coral growth, and clear blue water.
Strong currents bring nutrient-rich water, attracting large schools of fish and, at times, pelagic visitors such as sharks, barracudas, jacks, turtles, and eagle rays. Diving here is often done as relaxed drift dives along dramatic reef structures, making the Straits of Tiran a classic Red Sea highlight and a perfect mix of beauty, movement, and adventure.

Dahab Dive Sites:
Ras Abu Galum
Remote, wild, and wonderfully untouched, Ras Abu Galum offers a glimpse of the Red Sea as it once was. Accessible only by boat or camel, this protected area rewards divers with pristine reefs, quiet surroundings, and a strong sense of adventure—both underwater and topside.

The Islands
A dream dive for macro lovers and photographers. This shallow coral maze is bursting with life, color, and texture, with sunlight making the reef sparkle in just a few meters of water. As the dive deepens slightly around the underwater islands, stunning coral formations showcase the full beauty of the Red Sea.

The Bells to Blue Hole Drift
One of the world’s most iconic dives, this spectacular drift combines dramatic geology with rich marine life. Descend through the narrow chimney of the Bells, emerge onto a vertical reef wall, and drift south toward the Blue Hole. Expect colorful anthias, nudibranchs, turtles, and occasional surprises in the blue—rays, dolphins, or even whale sharks.

Gabr el Bint
Often considered Dahab’s most beautiful dive site, Gabr el Bint offers variety, scale, and atmosphere. Steep walls, massive gorgonian fans, coral-covered boulders, and sandy alleys create a diverse underwater landscape. Schools of fish, turtles, and hunting trevallies are common, making every dive here memorable.
